Gospel LK 21:1-4
When Jesus looked up he saw some wealthy people
putting their offerings into the treasury
and he noticed a poor widow putting in two small coins.
He said, “I tell you truly,
this poor widow put in more than all the rest;
for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth,
but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.”
Reflection:

For me, today’s gospel is one of the most important in terms of self examination: looking at my motives and intentions when it comes to sacrificing for the sake of others.
When discussing today’s gospel with a very wise, old priest friend, he explained the true value of any gift is not determined by how much it cost in money, but by the degree of  “sacrifice” offered by the giver.
Sacrifice may be simple or may be profound.
If the person you love desires a “Jim Dandy” from a Friendly’s that’s a half hour drive away, do you happily sacrifice the time to drive the half hour? Or, do you try to convince them to settle for an ice cream from the Dairy Queen just around the corner?
When trying to find quiet time with God, do I put things on hold after lunch and spend fifteen minutes sitting quietly with my Lord, or do I say to myself, “I’ll talk to him while I’m doing my morning workout at the gym.”
My priest friend told me that to be meaningful, the giving of a gift should “pinch” at least a little.
A beautiful rose is a lovely gesture appreciated by any mother.
But, coming home to folded laundry and a clean kitchen is a sacrificial offering that shouts, “I love you Mom!” without using words or flowers.
      “The gift of love is best expressed through the sacrifice of one’s own desires for the sake of the other.”       – – Unknown
