Can you tell me a little about yourself?
I was born in Boston and grew up in West Roxbury. I had a very peaceful, respectful, loving home. When you are little you think everyone has what you have but then you grow up and realize they don't. I credit parents with giving me a wonderful childhood and getting me on the right path. I fell in love at 17, married at 19, had 4 kids in 5 years, and then my marriage fell apart. There were some rough years but my kids were my reason for living and the best thing that ever happened to me. I'd do it all again to get them. I also have seven grandchildren ages 8-26 and they all live within driving distance to me.
What are your interests outside of My Brother's Keeper?
It seems like everything I do is kind of God related because it got me through some pretty tough years. I'm Greek Orthodox and I was president of my church's woman's philanthropic group called Philoptochos, which means "helper of the poor" in Greek. I was then elected to go on the New England Diocese Board. I am also part of an organization that my friend began called St. Catherine's Vision. At Saint Catherine's Vision we try to put out the compassion of Christ as much as we can, so you see My Brother's Keeper sort of fits in with everything else.
When and why did you start volunteering?
I started volunteering in 2006. I was seeing and hearing things that weren't making me happy at my church and I kept thinking: I'm not feeling Christ here, something's wrong and I need to back off to figure this out. I was sad though because I loved that little church and it wasn't the people it was other things. At this time I happened to read an article in the Globe about Jim and Terry and My Brother's Keeper. I called to send a small check and I talked to Jim who told me to come in and that was the beginning of a wonderful relationship with My Brother's Keeper. I drove to Easton and Jim gave me the history of My Brother's Keeper. I could hear Christmas carols and smell food and I just got the best feeling. As soon as he opened the doors I was like "oh my God this is where I belong." I felt the presence of Jesus everywhere in that room. It restored my faith that was kind of flip-flopping a little. I have been there ever since and I keep bringing people who bring people who bring people.
What type of work do you do when you volunteer at My Brother's Keeper?
It's a good hour back and forth to My Brother's Keeper so I go at Christmas time as much as I can. My little church is functioning again and all of the ladies in Philoptochos have come to My Brother's Keeper. It is a part of our mission now and they bring people and they love it. I also have a donation withdrawn every month because to me that's important.
Any final words?
At My Brother's Keeper you watch people glow. It's a safe, loving, compassionate place and I have never met one person that does not belong there.
Thank you, Joan, for making a difference
at My Brother’s Keeper!
