"I look back at my time with My Brother's Keeper as one of the most exciting times of my life."
Bill, what are your interests outside of volunteering at My Brother's Keeper?
I'm still involved in Superior Plumbing, the company I started in 1993. My kids are in on it too now, but I still work there at 76. I also love running events. I'm kind of a guy who can do that— one of my better assets is being able to make money for charities. For 13 years I ran a fundraiser for the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Massachusetts that was very successful. I've had a lot of fun heading up the My Brother's Keeper Golf Tourney for the last 8 years.
How did you first get involved at My Brother's Keeper?
I started volunteering around 15 years ago when My Brother's Keeper was run out of Brockton. I first got involved through my two sisters Mary and Teresa; I came with them during Christmas time. I liked what I saw and still do, and that's why I'm still with My Brother's Keeper.
You've done so much to help My Brother's Keeper over the years from starting the golf tournament fundraiser, to donating plumbing services to volunteering at Christmas time. What inspires you to serve with us year after year?
My Brother's Keeper believes in social justice and so do I. It's an operation of people of good will who work year after year without asking for anything in return. I really enjoy the people I get to serve with at My Brother's Keeper. It gives you faith in the human spirit.
I also believe sincerely that as a Christian, if you believe what Christ told us, that it's a very simple message to take care of the poor and the needy.
My Brother's Keeper accomplishes so much with so little. I've worked with a variety of different charities over the years, but as I get older, I get more and more involved with My Brother's Keeper because I fell in love with it. Imagine if we had My Brother's Keepers all over the country? We'd be so much better off.
Is there anything in particular that stands out about the deliveries you have made?
One of the things that always stands out to me, especially at Christmas, is how many mothers cry. No matter how many times I see it, it is still upsetting and it sticks with me. Most of the time the families we deliver to are single moms who are left to take care of their children alone. It seems that no matter how hard they try; they just can't seem to get themselves out of the situation that they're in. I remember them and it motivates me.
What is your favorite part of My Brother's Keeper?
The people and the purpose. At My Brother's Keeper I feel like part of the community. I don't feel like an outsider, I feel like an insider. I feel equal because everyone is embraced and loved. I'm 76 and I look at my time with My Brother's Keeper as one of the most exciting times of my life. I think My Brother's Keeper is in a league of it's own and I'll work there until I can't work anymore.
Thank you, Bill, for making a difference
at My Brother’s Keeper!
