Students primarily help our staff pick up and deliver furniture and food. As much as possible, we try to get students out of our building and into the community meeting the families we serve.
No. Students always accompany our staff or highly experienced volunteers (ie, retired teachers). Students never go into the community alone.
Though our work is physical, no special size or strength is required. If you can smile and treat people with respect, you can be a great volunteer at My Brother's Keeper!
Here is our typical schedule of pick ups and deliveries:
| Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday | |
| 10am - 1 pm | In-building | Furn. delivery | Furn. pickup | Furn. delivery | Furn. pickup |
| 2:30 - 5 pm | Furn. pickup | Food delivery | Food delivery | Food delivery | Furn. delivery |
To complete these tasks, we are usually out of the building for 2-3 hours at a time. Students must be available for the entire time window: we cannot bring students back to the building in the middle of a pick or delivery route.
Our volunteer opportunities are generally limited to weekdays, Monday – Friday from 9am – 5pm. We offer weekend and evening volunteer opportunities in December for our Christmas Assistance Program.
You should wear comfortable clothing— shorts, jeans, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and rain coat if needed. It is also very important to wear closed-toe shoes like running shoes or hiking boots—no flip-flops or sandals for safety reasons.
Like a family, our staff and volunteers eat lunch together every day around 1:30. Lunch is always provided by My Brother's Keeper. You do not have to bring a lunch unless you have special dietary restrictions. Water and soft drinks are also available for volunteers to take with them on the vehicles.
Communication is important to us. Students should contact My Brother's Keeper before showing up to volunteer or bringing a friend along because we have a limited number of seats in our vehicles. To provide a meaningful experience for everyone, we need an accurate count of volunteers.
We are flexible. As early as you can, call Ryan Thorley at 508-238-7512 to let us know you are unable to attend. If you have a friend who volunteers at My Brother's Keeper, you can ask them to come in your place.
Yes. Many students volunteer at My Brother's Keeper to complete required hours. We maintain a volunteer log and our staff is happy to fill out any necessary paperwork or write a letter confirming volunteer hours.
While nothing is required, we ask student volunteers to help us in two ways when finishing up their service:
First, complete our short, anonymous Student Volunteer Survey to improve the experience for future students. Second, write a short reflection about your service at My Brother's Keeper. We are most interested in hearing a story about a delivery you participated in and how the experience impacted you. You can drop it off at My Brother's Keeper at the end of your service or submit it electronically. (info@mybrotherskeeper.org)
