Gospel LK 10:13-16
Jesus said to them,
“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!
For if the mighty deeds done in your midst
had been done in Tyre and Sidon,
they would long ago have repented,
sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon
at the judgment than for you.
And as for you, Capernaum, ‘Will you be exalted to heaven?
You will go down to the netherworld.’
Whoever listens to you listens to me.
Whoever rejects you rejects me.
And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”
Reflection:

“Jesus said to them,
“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!
For if the mighty deeds done in your midst
had been done in Tyre and Sidon,
they would long ago have repented,
sitting in sackcloth and ashes.”
Jesus clearly refers to the “mighty deeds” done in the city of Chorazin.
Yet, there is no mention in the New Testament of His ever visiting Chorazin.
Notwithstanding how much has been written about Jesus, today’s gospel reminds me of how very little we know about the life and works of Jesus Christ.
However, my faith in Jesus is not dependent on proof of the miracles He performed. The foundation of my faith is rooted in the love and mercy Jesus showed to the suffering and downtrodden.
When a stranger walks into My Brother’s Keeper to volunteer, we know nothing about them. But, we accept them as Christ, coming to extend help to the needy with compassion and mercy.
As with Jesus at Chorazin, in the generations to come people may not be aware of every good deed we have performed. But, if we live to serve Christ and others, we will be remembered as children of God.
“But there are also many other things that Jesus did; if every one of them were written down, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.” John 21:25
