Gospel MK 9:14-29
As Jesus came down from the mountain with Peter, James, John
and approached the other disciples,
they saw a large crowd around them and scribes arguing with them.
Immediately on seeing him,
the whole crowd was utterly amazed.
They ran up to him and greeted him.
He asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?”
Someone from the crowd answered him,
“Teacher, I have brought to you my son possessed by a mute spirit.
Wherever it seizes him, it throws him down;
he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid.
I asked your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable to do so.”
He said to them in reply,
“O faithless generation, how long will I be with you?
How long will I endure you? Bring him to me.”
They brought the boy to him.
And when he saw him,
the spirit immediately threw the boy into convulsions.
As he fell to the ground, he began to roll around
and foam at the mouth.
Then he questioned his father,
“How long has this been happening to him?”
He replied, “Since childhood.
It has often thrown him into fire and into water to kill him.
But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”
Jesus said to him,
“‘If you can!’ Everything is possible to one who has faith.”
Then the boy’s father cried out, “I do believe, help my unbelief!”
Jesus, on seeing a crowd rapidly gathering,
rebuked the unclean spirit and said to it,
“Mute and deaf spirit, I command you:
come out of him and never enter him again!”
Shouting and throwing the boy into convulsions, it came out.
He became like a corpse, which caused many to say, “He is dead!”
But Jesus took him by the hand, raised him, and he stood up.
When he entered the house, his disciples asked him in private,
“Why could we not drive the spirit out?”
He said to them, “This kind can only come out through prayer.”
Reflection:

Today people still argue with those of us who believe in Jesus Christ and do our best to follow the gospel.
Non-believers, and those who struggle to believe, pose questions that are difficult, even impossible to answer, i.e., “Why does God allow famines? Why do innocent people die? Why are some rich and others remain poor?”

Upon hearing from the father that his son is possessed by a spirit and His disciples cannot cure him, Jesus’ first reaction is to act, not to argue.
Jesus commands…….“Bring him to me.”
Herein lies a lesson for us: When confronted with a person who is in distress, don’t debate! Pray and take action to help them.

Then he questioned his father,
“How long has this been happening to him?”
He replied, “Since childhood.

Jesus said to him,

Do I pray timidly, tentatively hoping that maybe God will somehow bring about what I am asking Him? Or, do I pray with an expectant faith, believing what Jesus has told me?
“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7: 9-11)
Faith: The degree to which I believe that which I hope for will come to pass.

We should never forget that any power that we have comes from God. The strength of our faith is depended upon nourishing our relationship with God through heartfelt conversations, just as we do with our best friend. Prayer is constant communication and worship of God.
Prayer is the fuel that powers our faith.
“I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.” John 5:30
