The annual Mass of Gratitude is the kickoff for the Christmas season at My Brother's Keeper. We come together in family and community to thank God and ask his blessing on the year's Christmas effort. The mass is held in our operation center on the Friday following Thanksgiving. It is a great opportunity for families to find out about our ministry and sign up for wrapping and delivering volunteer opportunities during the Christmas season. In continuing with their model for Christian education, the Xaverian Brothers High School offers a semester of volunteer service to all senior students. Students must meet specific academic requirements to participate, and each student volunteers for 25-30 hours per week to a local service organization. My Brother's Keeper was privileged to
have six student volunteers during the Spring of 2006. These students
provide great assistance to us in making deliveries and accomplishing
our mission to bring the love and hope of Jesus Christ to those we
serve. In exchange, the students learn the value and importance of giving
to others, especially within their local community. The Urban Plunge is an Alternative Winter Break Service Program for college students. It is administered by the University of Notre Dame (UND). My Brother's Keeper has participated as a host site since 1997. In 1999, My Brother's Keeper expanded its site role to include students from Stonehill College, a sister school to UND, and other local colleges. Our Urban Plunge experience emphasizes direct service to & contact with those in need because the people we serve are our best teachers. Each day begins with Mass and consists of several deliveries of furniture and food. At night, we discuss and reflect on the day’s events as it relates to the Gospel. All participants are asked to write a 2-3 page reflection on their service experience. Click here to read reflections from this year's Urban Plunge. For more information on Urban Plunges throughout the country, please visit the Center for Social Concerns (CSC) website.
