Could you tell me a little about yourself-where you grew up, what lead you to where you are today?
I grew up in North Attleboro. I went to Bridgewater State where I earned a degree in Physical Education. I did gymnastics in high school and college and I also started teaching gymnastics in college. After college I got married and had kids. I started Arnold's Gymnastics Academy in 1996 and have been teaching there ever since. My three kids are all grown up and out of the house now. I also got remarried and have two stepdaughters as well.
What are your interests outside of My Brother's Keeper?
I am interested in physical fitness and exercise. Even when I was a little kid I knew I wanted to be a gym teacher. I was a gym teacher for a little while but my first husband was in the military so we moved around a lot. Due to all of the moving I stopped teaching in the school system.
What made you decide to open your own gymnastics academy?
I had worked for other organizations and felt a higher calling to open my own gymnastics school, so I took a leap of faith and opened my own. We work with students ages 18 months to 18 years and offer both recreational and competitive teams. I have a really great staff that runs things when I am out of the building so it is not too hard to balance the Gymnastics Academy with volunteering.
How long have you been volunteering at My Brother's Keeper?
I have been volunteering for three years. One of my friends volunteers at My Brother's Keeper during Christmastime which is how I found out about the organization. Arnold's Gymnastics Academy decided to donate money to My Brother's Keeper because we like to keep our donations local. After our donation, Vin Shea, the Mission Advancement Director, called to see if I wanted to come in and have a tour of the Easton Facility and I've been coming back ever since.
What do you do when you volunteer at My Brother's Keeper?
On Thursdays I volunteer in Easton and usually do furniture deliveries and on Fridays I volunteer in Dartmouth and usually do furniture pickups.
What is a memorable story you have from your time at My Brother's Keeper?
A couple of years ago we were delivering furniture to a mom in Fall River who was extremely excited for us to deliver a fridge and beds. Her kids had been taken away from her because she didn't have these items and there was someone coming to her home that same day to check if her children could move back in with her. She was so happy to see us because we were delivering the furniture she needed to get her kids back.
What is your favorite part of My Brother's Keeper?
My favorite part is the people. The employees and everyone who volunteers are just so nice. They are great people and great to be around.
Do you have any final words?
Through my experiences in life and my experience at My Brother's Keeper I have learned that there are no coincidences. God puts us where we need to be and puts us in situations to teach us and to help us become closer to him.
